Stephen Found has spent years discovering what can happen after that first word. Through his work, his time welcoming visitors to West Park Gardens, and now his plans for GATHER, he has built a philosophy around connection: say hello, make room for a conversation, and see where it leads.
Our feature story introduces Stephen, the Culpeper connector whose newest idea brings people together around remarkable tables in remarkable places.
Then we head north for the 21st Annual Route 11 Yard Crawl, where more than 43 miles of the Shenandoah Valley will become one long invitation to stop the car and investigate somebody else's folding table.

A Dinner Where Virginia History Gets a Place Setting
GATHER is bringing its first Culpeper dinner to historic Salubria Manor on Saturday, August 29, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. This one is built for people who like their evenings with a little story, a little ceremony, and a very good reason to linger at the table.
Provision & Forage is a five-course dinner from Chef Frida Johansson, built around Virginia ingredients, thoughtful pairings, and the food stories early Virginians carried, discovered, cooked, and shared.
It is part dinner, part place-based storytelling, and part "why don't we do things like this more often?" evening.
We met Stephen Found at the estate sale he held after selling West Park Gardens. Malinda, who loves yard sales, estate sales and thrift stores with the kind of devotion other people reserve for college football, wanted to see what he was selling.
Instead, we found a story.
For years, Stephen welcomed travelers from around the world into Culpeper through West Park Gardens. Along the way, he discovered that hospitality begins long before the meal is served. Sometimes, it begins with the simple decision to look up, say hello and see what happens next.
Now he is carrying that idea into GATHER, a series of long-table dinners designed to connect people through food, history and remarkable Virginia places. Its first Culpeper dinner will unfold at Historic Salubria, with Malinda helping bring it to life as GATHER’s Event Director.
We went looking at somebody else’s furniture and came home with a friendship, a new adventure and the story of a man setting the table for Culpeper.
The road beneath the Route 11 Yard Crawl once had toll gates. The Valley Turnpike collected its last toll in 1918 and became part of U.S. Route 11 in 1928. This weekend, you can save that toll money for somebody else’s crockpot.
What to Do This Week
Culpeper has apparently decided there is room in one week for deep breathing, fresh tomatoes, conversational French and artillery fire.
Ease into Thursday with Sloth Yoga at Pranapiloga. The slow, mindful class costs $25 and runs from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Bring a favorite blanket and move at roughly the speed of an August afternoon.
Saturday begins with the National Farmers Market Week Celebration at the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Stock up on produce, flowers, baked goods and all the other things that were not on your original shopping list.
Then, from noon to 9 p.m., Fire and Steel brings battlefield maneuvers, historical tours and artillery demonstrations to Cedar Mountain Battlefield. The program also includes an evening artillery demonstration. Admission is $15 for adults, while children 16 and younger are free.
On Sunday, practice your French without buying a plane ticket. Français with Françoise meets at Revalation Vineyards from 3 to 5 p.m. The conversation is free, and you are welcome to bring a snack.

On August 8, the Route 11 Yard Crawl turns 43-plus miles of Old Valley Pike into a treasure hunt stretching from New Market to Stephens City. Here’s how to make the most of the crawl.
Our first Culpeper HQ Dinner Club date has now passed, and we made the decision to postpone rather than force an evening before we had enough people to create the kind of thoughtful, well-matched tables we have in mind.
The idea has not changed.
You complete a short questionnaire, we use your answers to help place you at a small table with people from around Culpeper, and everyone meets for dinner at a local restaurant revealed shortly before the event.
Culpeper is full of people whose stories deserve more attention.
Maybe it is a business owner who has quietly served the community for decades. A volunteer who never asks for recognition. An artist, musician, coach, teacher, craftsman, neighbor, collector, cook, historian, farmer, vendor, or local character who makes this area more interesting.
Maybe they know the story behind something the rest of us keep walking past.
Maybe they are the reason a local place feels like itself.
Either way, tell us who Culpeper should know.
